Content Management

A Content Management System (CMS) is a software system used for content management. This may include computer files, image media, audio files, electronic documents and web content.

The idea behind a CMS is to make these files available from any location. A Content Management System is often used for archiving as well.

Advantages for a CMS for individuals as well as small organisations include:

  • Management of contact information behind a secure login, allowing display of appropriate data on public website, user updating and emailing to lists.
  • Storing of documents used by groups.
  • Subscription systems and accounting can be managed on the web.

Having developed proprietary CMSes for many years, I am now abandoning proprietary coding and using the Drupal framework. Drupal is an Open Source CMS system which allows the creation of powerful web functionality without programming. I am convinced that it is slowly helping to redefine the way we think about building websites.
